The studio was hoping for a Summer (to possible holiday season) 2002 release. However, Cruise and other producers did not wants fans to get burned out of the franchise and there were several other big filming projects he wanted to focus on before doing another Mission Impossible movie. Release date was then moved to Summer 2005 but creative differences with potential directors and War of The Worlds being green lighted caused the release date to finally settle at May 2006.
