Season 2 had mostly been filmed before Covid imposed lockdown rules, but one additional episode of Season 2, which featured Lord Asriel, was cancelled. It was to be a standalone episode, not directly based on Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials but imagined by lead writer Jack Thorne, with the blessing and input of Philip Pullman, describing what Lord Asriel had been doing between going through the anomaly at the end of Season 1 and his reappearance at the beginning of Season 3.
