Amit Trivedi stated "A common friend and singer Shilpa Rao met Anurag Kashyap at a film festival two-and-a-half years ago where Anurag talked about Dev. D. He asked Shilpa if she knew someone new in music. She introduced me to him and when I gave him a demo of some random songs and sounds I had recorded he liked it. Six months later, I had six tracks of Dev. D ready. I hadnt read the script at that stage, but Anurag had told me that it was a modern take on Devdas and he told me what type of music and sounds he was looking at. Two months later I handed him two more tracks.in January 2008, we were back at Dev. D. Once I read the script, I added Pardesi, Saali khushi and Emotional atyachar.".
