Originally, Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991) was going to end with Captain Kirk handing over the Enterprise to Captain Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart). This was dropped because Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) took place more than seventy years after "The Undiscovered Country".
