The looks of at least three Dwarves ended up being quite different in the movie, than the production team had originally planned. At first, Thorin had a very long beard (like in the book) while Kili and Bofur had more prosthetics on their heads. The producers decided Thorin's beard needed to be trimmed, so that Richard Armitage could better show emotion, and they wanted the faces of James Nesbitt and Aidan Turner to be more recognizable. The in-story explanation for why Thorin's beard is kept short is because of him being in mourning since the loss of Erebor and he intended to regrow it after retaking the kingdom.
