Originally, Willem Dafoe was reluctant to dance wildly during the crime scene to spite his coworker's ineptitude, thinking it would be "inappropriate" for him to do so. However, director Troy Duffy convinced him to do it, citing something "inappropriate" such as this would exactly be something the character of Smecker would do.
