Originally, the villain Deacon Frost was an elderly German mad scientist from the mid-19th century looking for the secret to immortality, and had resorted to kidnapping people and using them for his test subjects for a vampire serum. He had kidnapped a woman, but her fiancé rescued her and during the struggle he accidentally injected himself with the serum, thus becoming one of the undead. In the movie adaptation and anime versions, Deacon Frost was made to appear much younger. Both Blade/Eric Brooks and Deacon Frost made their first appearances in Marvel Comics' The Tomb Of Dracula, issue #10 for Blade and #13 for Deacon Frost
