In spite of this film officially ending the Matrix movie trilogy, a continuation in the form of Matrix Resurrections (2021) was announced 16 years later and released in 2021. Director Lana Wachowski based the on, "ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality [that] are even more relevant now".
