Scott Cooper had previously directed Christian Bale in the western Hostiles. "Native American themes and issues are quite important to me," Cooper says. In order to stay true to the Wendigo legend, Cooper worked with one of the foremost authorities on the mystery of the Wendigo, Grace Dillon, professor at Portland State University. "She said to me, 'Scott, the Wendigo can manifest in many ways, but it's first and foremost a spirit.' And then in reading the screenplay, she and I discussed that this is a monster or creature of God that kind of reflects our own demons and feeds off of our worst potential." He continues, "The Wendigo represents kind of a surrogate for the issues that people would rather not confront."
