Multiple alternative endings were filmed, and even more were planned and considered to some capacity. One filmed ending cut to some time later, revealing MacReady had been rescued and taken back to civilization while Childs had perished, with Mac passing a blood test for a mysterious off-screen government official who somehow knows the entire situation. This ending was filmed as a precaution and never used, even for test screenings, as it was not part of John Carpenter's original vision for the film. Another ending that was shot showed a Malamute (presumably The Thing) surviving the explosion, stopping to look one last time at the burning camp before it turns and runs off into the snowy landscape. A third ending simply showed Childs getting up and walking off into the snowstorm, leaving MacReady by himself. Again, this ending was never used. Some purposed endings that went unfilmed included a climactic showdown between MacReady and Childs, a rescue-chopper arriving just in time to save them, and the two men committing suicide with a stick of dynamite.
