Actor Rajinikanth, the top superstar of Tamil cinema, wanted to be a part of Ponniyin selvan but the director refused his request citing not having enough meaty portions for him in this project. According to the actors Director ManiRatnam was very particular about casting as he believed only certain actors could embody the spirit and physicality of the characters. He would not consider anyone else in the characters.
