The special effects scene showing John Cassavetes exploding had the actor in the shot bleeding and convulsing from which then a lamp falls to the ground creating a brief white flash. From this, in editing, the actor was replaced with a dummy, which was rigged to explode, and the shot was filmed on several high-speed cameras from a number of different angles. The scene took two takes to pull off; according to De Palma "The first time we did it, it didn't work. The body parts didn't go towards the right cameras and this whole set was covered with blood. And it took us almost a week to get back to do take 2."
