During the dreams sequence, the image of Southern California as being a land of plenty was prominently played up. Oranges and grapes for the picking, fresh milk on the hoof. Everything was always in apple pie order. Unfortunately, as many found out, such was not always the case. Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" would be published in 1939, with a film version coming the next year.
