This show recycles a lot of standard plotlines from other sitcoms and soap operas. The woman who is faking her pregnancy; (Will's first wife Terri on Glee and Bree on Desperate Housewives); the hypercompetitive sibling who comes into town that always beats out our hero at everything; (Blaine's brother Cooper; and also Sam on Cheers; Sue Anne on The Mary Tyler Moore Show; Ted and his brother on The Mary Tyler Moore Show); the parent that walked out on our hero when they were young just to come back into their lives later; which makes the hero both touched and angry; (Rachel and her mother Shelby on Glee; and Cliff on Cheers, Fonzie on Happy Days; Jo on Facts of Life); one of the kids drinks too much and gets in trouble with the adults on the show; (all the kids and Will in "Blame it on the Alcohol", the episode where they all get drunk; also Vanessa on Cosby Show and Becky on Roseanne); one of the female characters gets beaten by her boyfriend or husband and she won't leave him, (Coach Bieste on Glee and Jackie on Roseanne; also Thelma on Good Times); a young teenaged couple on the show is moving too fast so their parents use reverse psychology to split them up; (Rachel and Finn on Glee; and Marcia and Harvey Klinger on Brady Bunch); the jock who joins the glee club and gets teased by the other jocks at school; (Finn on Glee and Peter on Brady Bunch); the gay guy who gets all butch for a few minutes to prove a point, much to the shock of the other characters on the show; (Kurt and his Dad on Glee; Beverly and Archie on All in the Family; Jack and Will on Will and Grace); the ditz who somehow gets entered into an academic decathlon and then somehow does great in the competition, to everyone's surprise; (Britney on Glee and Mallory on Family Ties); the two-timing girl who lies to her boyfriend about who the father is, leading to a big confrontation later on; (Quinn and Finn on Glee; Jenna and Bobby on Dallas); also the underdog teacher and his group of misfit students being bullied by the mean principal; (Will and Sue when she was principal on Glee; Wayne Kotter and Mr. Woodman on Welcome Back Kotter; Charlie Moore and Principal Shilling on Head of the Class). Although Ryan Murphy makes these cliches seem original through vivid characterizations and cutting edge dialogue.
