The word "Saracen" is used often throughout the film by Europeans as a generic word to mean Arabs and others from the East. In fact, there was no such tribe or national group who called themselves Saracens. The word is a corruption of the Old French word "sarazin", whose etymology is uncertain, but might have originated from the Arabic "sarki", meaning "east". Saladin himself was a Kurd, and he fielded an army which consisted of Kurds, Turks, Egyptians, Damascenes, Aleppans, Yemenis and Mesopotamians, as well as assorted religious volunteers.
