Originally conceived as a love letter to the city of San Francisco, the filmmakers noticed while they were collecting archive footage for it that themes from Alfred Hitchcock's film La donna che visse due volte (1958) kept popping up in the movies they were watching. Needing a structure for their film, they decided to base it around the story of La donna che visse due volte (1958).
