Dante the dog could've died at around (15 mins.) as he is caught by Miguel eating a plate of mole on the ofrenda. Mole is a traditional Mexican dish that consists of a combination of chili's, spices, and chocolate. It's a sauce that's traditionally poured over chicken and served with rice; Dante is chowing down on a plate of chicken covered mole, based on how it looks, with a dark brown sauce covered over a chicken leg. Also, Dante follows Miguel into the land of the dead towards the beginning of the movie, when the paint consumption scene doesn't occur until when they're both already in the land of the dead together, during the moment that Hector is painting Miguel's face so that he blends in with the crowd. With chocolate being incredibly poisonous to dogs, that's what killed him and allowed Dante and Miguel to enter the land of the dead together. So the real reason Dante dies is because he ate Cocoa.
