Many characters on the show had names that were puns. Fargo North, Decoder, was a pun on Fargo, North Dakota; it was also a sly pun on the "decoding" style of reading individual word sounds, which the show used to teach children how to read. Easy Reader's name was a pun on Easy Rider (1969). J. Arthur Crank's name was a pun on the movie mogul J. Arthur Rank, although the character was a combination of Ralph Kramden, Archie Bunker, and Oscar the Grouch. Chef Julia Grown-up was a parody of the well-known chef Julia Child. Dr. Doolots was a pun on Il favoloso dottor Dolittle (1967), although the character was based on Groucho Marx. In one sketch (which is included in one of the two DVD box sets), Skip Hinnant played a character named Early Gibbons, a parody of the then-popular outdoorsman and natural foods advocate Euell Gibbons. And the name of the teen musical group the Short Circus was a pun on short circuit, in keeping with the show's title.
