When the title character debuted in Detective Comics, he was billed as "*The* Batman". The article " the" was also used in the 1940s serials. The use of the word "the" had fallen out of favor by the 1960s. Although, it was revived for the 1970s serious re-imagining of the character by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams.
