Shortly before the show started, Michael Landon's real-life daughter (Leslie Landon) had known Melissa Gilbert, since they were in elementary school. When they both stood in line at their school cafeteria, Melissa had been told by Leslie that she won the role of Laura Ingalls, on the show, beating out 500 other young girls.
