This is the first time that Mothra fought on Godzilla's side since Gli eredi di King Kong (1968), though only because they both faced the same enemies rather than being allied with each other. Despite the American-made Godzilla II - King of the Monsters (2019) re-imagining the two monsters as supportive allies, Mothra and Godzilla have traditionally been bitter enemies who would only work together by force.
