Lou taking Mary to the Teddies in Season 6's Sue Ann Falls in love was supposed to be the beginning of season long story arc where Mary and Lou fall in love and develop a Tracy-Hepburn type relationship. Mary Tyler Moore nixed this idea though. James Burrows, Brooks and the other creative people involved decided to hold on to this idea and use it for their next big sitcom, Cheers.
