The film takes place before the events of the third film, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). Sung Kang plays Han in both films, and died in Tokyo Drift. However, his character was so beloved that director Justin Lin brought him back for this film, thus setting the events after 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) but some time before The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). When Dominic tells Han to go his own way, he says he's going to go to Tokyo, where he eventually ends up after Fast & Furious 6 (2013) to become a major character in the third film.
