Early in the film, Lumiere and Mrs. Potts criticize the Beast for failing to properly romance Belle. He replies that he does not know how to do it. By this point, the film had already pointed out that the Beast had willingly isolated himself from the outside world. He knows very little about social interactions, and he is expected to woo a woman. The results indicate his awkwardness at even grasping the concept.
