By the time this series was in its concept stages, Gene Roddenberry had been banned for about five years from the sets of the movies featuring the original cast. Paramount felt that he constantly interfered in the filming and directing of the films and hoped that he would be distracted by this new series enough to leave the films alone. However, once the series started to find its feet, the studio again found that Roddenberry started to interfere with the production and writing processes, so he was gradually sidelined by the producers and found himself locked out of conferences. It was later discovered that Roddenberry's behaviour was part connected to his worsening ill-health which resulted in his death in 1991.
