In the "I wish I was Back In The Army" number, Wallace and Davis sing the line, "How we would yell, for Dietrich and Cornell, Jolson, Hope and Benny all for free." Marlene Dietrich, Al Jolson, Bob Hope and Jack Benny are all well remembered by movie and TV audiences. Less well remembered is stage actress Katherine Cornell. Widely popular in the 1930s and 1940s, Cornell performed for Allied troops in Europe, but made only a tiny number of film appearances in her lifetime.
