Victor, Hugo and Laverne are never called gargoyles in the movie. That is perhaps because, although commonly known as such, they are not gargoyles but "grotesques", which are statues of demons or monsters said to scare evil spirits. True gargoyles are hollow and used as spouts for draining rainwater, hence the name: it comes from the French term "gargouille", which means to gargle.
