The explanation of the four fathers mentioned their being turned over to the Chinese when they took over Hong King. During their colonial period the British compelled China to grant them a 99 year lease on Hong Kong. This lease expired on 1 July 1997, which was just months before the setting of this film. As the end of the lease approached it became an extremely important issue for the British, the U.S., Australia, and many other countries. The key concern was in regard to Hong Kong's presence as a major global economic hub and concerns about the policies of the Chinese government regarding top tier private enterprise. As things would eventually turn out, it had a huge impact on China, paving the way to great wealth for many and dramatically fueling China's rise to being a major economic world power.
