Ace never got a farewell story following the cancellation of the series, and Sophie Aldred did not return as Ace in Doctor Who (1996). The "New Adventures of Doctor Who" novel "Love and War" by Paul Cornell reveals that Ace ended her adventures with The Doctor when The Doctor manipulated a traveler named Jan whom had fallen in love with Ace to sacrifice his life to destroy fungoid creatures called The Hoothi. Ace refused to accept The Doctor's apology about what happened and Ace left with the other human travelers and disowned The Doctor and The Doctor gained a new companion, archaeologist Bernice Summerfield.
