The choice of having Kris Kringle meet and speak with a little Dutch girl is not without its coincidences. The basic characteristics of the modern Santa Claus were largely based on Clement Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which itself was inspired from an earlier story by a Dutch author in the early 1800s. In fact, the reindeer Donner and Blitzen were anglicized versions of the original Dutch words for thunder and lightning.
