Boris Karloff was supposed to play Griffin but refused when asked to take a pay cut. Director James Whale wanted his friend Claude Rains to play Griffin but producer Carl Laemmle didn't want to risk an unknown and asked James to approach Colin Clive which he did but begged him not to take the part, To make Griffin seem invisible when he wasn't bandaged he wore black velvet under his wrappings and clothes and filmed against a black velvet background.
