One of the hallmarks of anti-heroes is the bending or breaking of conventional moral standards and seemingly just laws, or challenging authority figures who are already assumed to be on the side of good. But TGBU takes this rebellion even further by having its anti-heroes, who at their core are not evil, present themselves as just plain nasty people. Blondie's cruelly abandoning Tuco in the desert serves no purpose. Tuco's tormenting and cheating the old gun dealer serves no purpose. Angel Eyes killing Stevens and stranding his family, even after he gets the information he wants, and payment on top of that, is viciously unnecessary. Blondie's eventual compassion for Tuco, and Tuco's quiet vulnerability, are what only redeem them.
