The screenplay is credited to John Logan, who had earlier written the TV movie "RKO 281", about Orson Welles. Both films begin with a brief prologue in which the central character is seen as a young child being given advice by his mother which, it is implied, will shape his future life. However, Logan is far more sympathetic to Hughes than to Welles, to the extent of making no reference at all to Hughes's notoriously reactionary politics or to his overt racism.
