In the original novel by Walter Kirn, Ryan Bingham has blackout seizures, which are revealed in the end as symptoms of terminal cancer. While the subplot is not in the movie, some have speculated that it was scripted and filmed but deleted from the final film. Some viewers have claimed that Ryan's mission to collect 10 million frequent-flier miles and connect with Alex despite his earlier relationship philosophy come from his imminent death. Ryan also mishears a flight attendant asking him if he wants "the cancer" (she meant "the can, sir"). Director/screenwriter Jason Reitman has denied all of this, stating that the cancer subplot was never part of his screenplay, and the "cancer/can, sir?" joke was something he had once overheard on a flight (it didn't come from the book). He chose to add it to the film as a nod to the readers familiar with the cancer subplot.
