Isla Fisher was the runner-up for the role of Daphne before Sarah Michelle Gellar was cast, as director Raja Gosnell wanted a real-life couple to play Fred and Daphne. Her audition impressed the casting directors nonetheless, and she was given the supporting role of Mary Jane as a result.
