To accomplish the effect of Christine getting dragged to hell by demons at the end of the film, the practical effects and VFX team built a hydraulic cylinder and two types of chairs on a green-screen set for Alison Lohman to recline on. Second unit director and visual effects supervisor Bruce Jones states, "The chairs were made out of Lucite, which is clear, so that light could come through. The cylinder had a working space so that our KNB folks could be in green suits with prosthetic hands and physically have interaction with Alison." While on the chairs, Lohman was lowered into the cylinder. The cylinder was filled with plaster rubber rocks that looked similar to rocks on train tracks so that when Lohman is pulled down into it while being grabbed onto, cinematographer Peter Deming could capture the illusion that she's being pulled down through the ground as if it's quicksand. Jones further states, "We filled in the hole with CG rocks and debris and adding shooting-light beams." 3D match-moving was also used for the rubber rocks and so that the railroad tracks would be digitally added in post-production.
