The cast hated the uniforms, which required assistance in order to be removed (in particular, William Shatner had started to wear a corset in the 1970s, the lines of which can be slightly visible underneath his uniform in certain scenes). One of the cast's conditions for returning in a sequel was to have new uniforms, which led to the creation of the red-tunic uniforms seen in later films.
