The film came together and fell apart twice before it was shot. Originally scheduled for shooting in 2003, the American studio pulled the plug when the financial crisis after the 9/11 terrorism attacks left the US dollar in a weakened state versus the Australian dollar, cutting off 30% of the planned budget. Soon after Mel Gibson fell from grace in Hollywood and many thought the movie could never be made without him. The film was revived in 2009, casting Tom Hardy as Max, and was set to shoot in the Broken Hills region of Australia (where the first three Mad Max movies had been shot) when unprecedented rain storms in the region turned the desert lush with vegetation. Shooting then switched to Namibia, Africa and the cameras finally started rolling on July 9, 2012.
