Roger Donaldson was so impressed by Belgrade that he immediately saw it as a very real and tangible character in the film and set out to take advantage of the rich variety and texture the city backdrop offered. The aim became to dispel the image of a gray and depressing ex-Communist metropolis, and to present the city as it really is: colorful, vibrant, and with a varied and often unique cultural and architectural palette.
