The character of Patrick is based on "The Taming of the Shrew"'s Petruchio. Heath Ledger drew on Richard Burton's portrayal in La bisbetica domata (1967), as well as giving him a "Jack Nicholson edge to him with his cheekiness and his smiles". Coincidentally both actors played the Joker in Batman movies, as Ledger did later, and as Jared Leto (mentioned in the English version as a picture Kat had) did after him.
