Robert Wise was convinced to accept the position as director by his wife Millicent, who was a huge fan of Star Trek (1966). His wife was also instrumental in convincing Wise to campaign for Leonard Nimoy's return to the project. His wife was also part of the crew in the crew briefing scene and can be seen in front, close to David Gerrold.
