When Sanjay Dutt and Kamal Hassan were not able to do the film, Ghai finally reluctantly approached Kumar Gaurav. Ghai told Gaurav he would have to grow a beard and work out a little bit to build his body. Rajendra Kumar then stepped in and demanded a unheard of amount for Kumar Gaurav's pay. This turned Ghai completely off and he decided to scrap all plans and cast a newcomer.
