The Joseph Bell is featured prominently in the series, later re-forged into the bells Methuselah and Matthias. According to the novels, the Bell was cast by the mouse Joseph the Bellmaker and brought as a gift to the Badger Lord of Salamandastron. The Badger Lord, in turn, gifted it to Redwall Abbey, where Joseph and his daughter Mariel Gullwhacker lived for a period of time before going off on adventures.
