The final scene was shot in the dead of winter, after the trees in Vienna had already lost their leaves. To get the effect of leaves falling down as Joseph Cotten and Alida Valli's characters went down the road, stagehands were stationed on cranes just above camera range and threw leaves down as the actors passed.
