While the film claims to be "based on a true story," it's more likely that it was just a story and not a true one. The story is based on the memoirs of Hopkins, who wrote about how he raced and won the Ocean of Fire. However, these claims turned out to be false as researchers found that Hopkins lived a more urban life than that of his claimed western cowboy life. Saudi historians have even pointed out that such a race would be impossible as the harsh environment of the Saudi Arabian desert would be too severe and hostile.
