An alternate ending was scripted where Dr. Hannibal Lecter is calling Clarice on the phone, sporting a beard, glasses, lighter hair and having undergone some cosmetic surgery. Before he hangs up, he tells Clarice that she looked very lovely in her blue suit today, indicating that he is still around. It is then revealed that he has tied and gagged Dr. Frederick Chilton in his home, with a dead security guard lying on the floor. The scene ends with Lecter holding a knife and saying "Well, Dr. Chilton, shall we begin?" before the camera fades to black. Director Jonathan Demme deemed this ending to be too "icky", and had it changed to the now iconic ending where Dr. Hannibal Lecter follows Dr. Chilton through the village.
