Many viewers were confused by the fact that Jack, a little boy, has very long hair. Some of these viewers have also developed a misunderstanding about Jack's gender and generated elaborate but incorrect theories speculating that Joy "knows" that Jack is a girl but somehow hides this fact from their captor so that he would not become interested in raping Jack the same way he regularly rapes Joy. In fact, Jack is indeed a boy, and the actual reason that both he and Joy have very long hair is simply that their captor doesn't groom them or let them have scissors or any sharp implement that could be used against him.
