Whilst the UK's other prime time soap operas (Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks) all have at least one original cast member, Emmerdale has not had one since 1994, when both Sheila Mercier (Annie Sugden) and Frazer Hines (Joe Sugden) departed within months of each other. Mercier's guest appearance in 2009 for Jack Sugden's funeral was the last time an original cast member appeared on the show.
