An early storyline in the series involves Charlie (Dulé Hill) and Zoey (Elisabeth Moss) stating to date and then receiving hate mail and threats because they are an interracial couple. In a September 2021 New York Times interview with Alexis Soloski, Dulé Hill said that he himself also received a lot of racist hate mail while a young actor on The West Wing just because he was a Black man playing a role in which he was in a relationship with a white woman. ""It was shocking to me,' Hill [recalled]. 'I said, 'Wow. It runs deep in this country. It runs deep.' Hill requested those letters and taped them up in his [West Wing] trailer as a peculiar kind of inspiration."
