In the graphic novel, Gordon Dietrich is not only Evey's lover, but a slimy, cynical man and more an accomplice and culprit of the system than a victim. In this movie, he is a gay man who criticizes the system, hides his homosexuality, and ultimately dies for it. Stephen Fry, who portrayed Deitrich, advocated heavily for those changes to the character, being both a passionate defender of gay rights and a government critic.
